Easter in India
In India, Easter celebrations are particularly prominent in the regions of Goa and Kerala, where Christians follow vibrant and devout religious traditions. In Goa, a former Portuguese colony, the festivities begin with the Maundy Thursday Mass and continue until Easter Sunday, with processions and liturgical celebrations. Goa's churches, many of which are built in the Baroque style, attract thousands of worshippers during this period.
The most notable tradition in Goa is the "Palm Sunday" procession, when Christians march through the streets carrying palm branches, commemorating Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On Good Friday, processions are also a significant event, with the re-enactment of Christ's last steps, followed by a Mass celebrating his death and resurrection.
In Kerala, known for its large Christian community, the celebrations are equally intense, with special Masses and processions through the streets, where the faithful sing songs of praise and pray. Cuisine also plays an important role, with traditional dishes being prepared for the great Easter meal, which brings families together in a festive and renewal atmosphere.
