April 1st is Odisha Day
April 1st is Odisha Day in India, also known as Utkala Dibasa, in honour of the formation of the state of Odisha in 1936. The day marks the separation of Odisha from the provinces of Bihar and Orissa, ensuring its distinct cultural, linguistic and historical identity.
Odisha has a rich cultural heritage, being home to the famous Konark Temple, the Rath Yatra festival and diverse artistic and literary traditions. Before its official formation, the region was ruled by different dynasties and experienced British colonial influence, which made its struggle for autonomy even more significant.
Every year, the day is celebrated with parades, competitions, cultural events and tributes to leaders who fought for the creation of the state. In addition, fireworks displays and educational programmes are held to highlight the history and development of Odisha.
Odisha Day is not just a celebration but also a time to reflect on the progress of the state and the strengthening of its cultural and economic identity within India.
