March 26 Mercosur
March 26 Mercosur Day, the date that marks the signing of the Treaty of Asunción in 1991, an agreement that established the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). The regional bloc was created to strengthen economic, political and social cooperation among member countries, promoting the free movement of goods, services and people.
Mercosur began with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay and, over the years, has expanded its partnerships to include Venezuela (currently suspended) and Bolivia, which is in the process of joining. In addition, countries such as Chile, Colombia and Peru participate as associated states.
On this date, several events and debates are held to discuss the bloc's advances and challenges, including trade, cultural integration and regional mobility. Mercosur Day reinforces the importance of cooperation among South American countries for the economic development and political stability of the region.
