March 23 is Meteorology Day
March 23 is Meteorology Day, highlighting the importance of meteorology for society. The date was established in honor of the creation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950, an entity responsible for coordinating and promoting climate studies on a global scale.
Meteorology plays a fundamental role in weather forecasting, helping to prevent natural disasters, in agriculture, in air and sea transportation and even in public health. Advances in climate monitoring technologies allow experts to analyze atmospheric patterns and warn of extreme events, such as hurricanes, storms and heat waves.
Each year, World Meteorology Day brings a different theme, focused on climate change and the environmental challenges facing the planet. To celebrate the date, meteorological institutions promote lectures, educational campaigns and scientific dissemination on the impact of meteorology on the population's daily lives.
