March 21 is Down Syndrome
Today is Down Syndrome Day. The date was established by the United Nations (UN) in 2011 to raise awareness about the genetic condition and promote the inclusion and rights of people with Down Syndrome worldwide.
The choice of March 21 symbolizes trisomy of chromosome 21, a genetic characteristic that causes the syndrome. People with this condition face challenges, but they also have the skills and potential to lead a full and active life in society.
Each year, the day is marked by events, lectures and campaigns that reinforce the importance of accessibility, inclusive education and job opportunities. In several countries, institutions, families and organizations promote actions to combat prejudice and highlight the advances in the quality of life of people with Down Syndrome.
In Brazil, schools, companies and entities participate in the mobilization, encouraging acceptance and respect for diversity, reinforcing that inclusion is a commitment of the entire society.
