March 20 is Aquaculture
March 20 is Aquaculture Day in Brazil. The date was established with the aim of highlighting the importance of aquaculture, which involves the cultivation of aquatic organisms, such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks and plants, and is fundamental to the country's economic, social and environmental growth.
This practice has proven to be essential for ensuring food security and generating jobs, especially in coastal regions and inland Brazil. In addition, aquaculture contributes to the preservation of natural resources, relieving pressure on fish stocks and helping to conserve biodiversity.
Law No. 12,531, enacted on December 2, 2011, was responsible for officially establishing March 20 as National Aquaculture Day. The choice of the date refers to the delivery of the first titles for the use of federal waters for fish farming.
