March 12 is the feast day of Saint Innocent I
March 12 is the feast day of Saint Innocent I. Originally, the celebration was on July 28, but it was changed to the day of the saint's death.
Born in 378, in Albano, Italy, Saint Innocent I was the son of Anastasius I, and succeeded his father as papal president, which was an exception in the history of the Catholic Church. During his papacy, from 401 to 417, he played a crucial role in the Church, supporting Saint Jerome's Latin translation of the Bible (the Vulgate) and working for the unification of the Western Church around the Roman rites, monastic rules and the catalogue of canonical books.
In addition, he fought against heresies such as that of Pelagius of Britain and defended Saint John Chrysostom. During his papacy, he managed to get Emperor Honorius to ban gladiatorial contests. He died in 417, after 16 years of pontificate, and was succeeded by Zosimus.
