February 24 is the feast day of Saint Æthelbert
February 24 is the feast day of Saint Æthelbert, an important Anglo-Saxon king who played a key role in introducing Christianity to England. Saint Æthelbert, King of Kent from 580 until his death in 616, was the first English monarch to convert to Christianity, influenced by his wife Bertha, daughter of the Frankish king Charibert I. His conversion was a milestone in the spread of the Christian faith, with the arrival of the missionary Augustine of Canterbury, sent by Pope Gregory I in 597.
Saint Æthelbert is also remembered for his legislative contributions, creating the first known code of laws in a Germanic language, which helped establish order in the kingdom of Kent. He promoted Christianity, donating land for the construction of Canterbury Cathedral and helping to evangelize his people.
After his death, Æthelbert was canonized for his role in the Christianization of England. His liturgical feast day is celebrated on February 24, celebrating his faith and leadership.
