February 15 is Childhood Cancer Day
February 15 is Childhood Cancer Day, with the aim of raising awareness about childhood cancer, promoting early diagnosis and highlighting the importance of supporting children and their families. The date was established in 2002 by Childhood Cancer International (CCI) and is recognized worldwide.
Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death from disease among children and adolescents worldwide. It is estimated that around 400,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, with a higher incidence in low- and middle-income countries, where access to treatment is more limited.
On this day, health institutions, NGOs and communities in several countries will hold events, educational campaigns and solidarity actions to raise funds and support research that seeks advances in treatment. The lighting of monuments in gold, a symbol of the fight against childhood cancer, will be seen in several cities as a way of honoring children undergoing treatment and remembering those who have lost the battle.
The Day highlights the need for global efforts to ensure that all children have access to quality medical care, increasing the chances of a cure.
