February 12th is Galapagos Islands Day
February 12th is Galapagos Islands Day, marking the date on which the archipelago was officially annexed to Ecuador in 1832. Located in the Pacific Ocean, about a thousand kilometers off the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are recognized worldwide for their unique biodiversity and for having inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
The archipelago, made up of 13 main islands and several islets, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its volcanic landscapes and endemic species, such as giant tortoises, marine iguanas and various types of birds, make the Galápagos a symbol of environmental conservation.
Galapagos Islands Day will be celebrated with activities that promote awareness of the importance of preserving this unique ecosystem. Events include lectures, educational campaigns and joint conservation efforts involving local residents, scientists and authorities.
