January 9 is Astronaut's Day
January 9 is Astronaut's Day in Brazil, a date dedicated to celebrating achievements and advances in space exploration, as well as honoring professionals who dedicate themselves to this challenging and inspiring field.
The date is especially significant in Brazil because it highlights the country's contribution to the space sector, including the historic milestone achieved by Brazilian astronaut Marcos Pontes, who in 2006 became the first Brazilian to go into space. He participated in the Soyuz TMA-8 mission, traveling to the International Space Station (ISS).
In addition to honoring astronauts, the day is also an invitation to reflect on the scientific advances provided by space exploration, such as technological innovations, improvements in telecommunications, meteorology and climate studies.
In Brazil, Astronaut's Day is an opportunity to encourage the interest of new generations in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Educational events, lectures and activities in schools and scientific institutions usually mark the celebration.
