November 23rd, Childhood Cancer
November 23rd, Childhood Cancer Day, was established by Law No. 11,650 in 2008. The objective of the date is to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and adequate treatment of cancer in children and adolescents, in addition to highlighting the necessary support for families during treatment. The date seeks to disseminate information about the types of childhood cancer, such as leukemia, central nervous system tumors and lymphomas, in addition to promoting awareness campaigns and fundraising. In Brazil, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death from the disease among children and adolescents, with 12,600 new cases per year, but 80% can be cured if diagnosed and treated early.
