November 22nd is the anniversary of Niterói
November 22nd is the anniversary of Niterói . This date marks the founding of the city, which occurred in 1573, when Governor Estácio de Sá donated the lands located to the right of the entrance to Guanabara Bay to the indigenous chief Arariboia. Initially, Niterói was known as Vila Real da Praia Grande. Over the years, the city evolved, being elevated to the status of a village and later becoming the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro in different periods, such as from 1834 to 1895 and from 1903 to 1975. Today, Niterói is a city with almost 600,000 inhabitants and is located across from Rio de Janeiro, separated by Guanabara Bay. The date is a municipal holiday, and celebrations include masses, concerts and cultural events in various locations, such as Icaraí Beach and the Oscar Niemayer Popular Theater. The name "Niterói" comes from Tupi and means "winding port", reflecting the region's indigenous heritage.
