November 20th is Zumbi and Black Consciousness
November 20th is Zumbi and Black Consciousness Day in Brazil. The date was established by Law No. 10.639, of January 9, 2003, as a way to recognize and celebrate the resistance and struggle of black men and women throughout the history of Brazil, in addition to reflecting on the importance of Afro-Brazilian culture. The choice of November 20th is due to the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, one of the main leaders of the resistance to slavery in Brazil and a symbol of the fight for freedom. Zumbi was the last leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, one of the largest and most significant quilombos that existed in Brazil, where black people who escaped slavery came together to live in freedom. The date is an opportunity to discuss issues of racism, inequality and the appreciation of Afro-Brazilian culture.
