November 17th is Smith-Magenis Syndrome
November 17th is Smith-Magenis Syndrome Day. This date was established to raise awareness about the syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects physical and cognitive development, in addition to causing behavioral difficulties. In addition, it seeks to encourage research to better understand the condition and improve the quality of life of people living with Smith-Magenis syndrome. The syndrome is caused by a deletion or mutation in chromosome 17, specifically in the 17p11.2 region. Symptoms can include distinct facial features, sleep problems, developmental delay, learning difficulties, and behaviors that can be challenging, such as aggression and hyperactivity.
