November 5th is Tsunami Awareness
November 5th is Tsunami Awareness Day. This date was established by the United Nations (UN) in 2015 to raise global awareness of tsunami risks, promote disaster preparedness, and save lives through education and prevention. The choice of November 5th is inspired by a historical event that occurred in Japan in 1854. At the time, a local farmer saw signs of a possible tsunami and decided to set fire to his crops to draw the attention of the villagers. Thanks to this warning, the villagers retreated to higher ground, and many lives were saved. This heroic act became known as the Japanese legend of "Inamura-no-Hi" (or "burning sheaves of rice") and is an example of how knowledge and quick action can save lives.
