October 27th is the Day of Struggle for the Rights of People with Sickle Cell Disease in Brazil , and seeks to raise awareness about the condition, promote appropriate treatments and combat prejudice. Hemoglobinopathies are genetic diseases that affect the production of hemoglobin, and can be structural (hemoglobin that does not function properly) or productive (reduction in the hemoglobin level). Sickle cell anemia is the most common hemoglobinopathy, characterized by the deformation of red blood cells, which take on a sickle shape, causing anemia and complications. Although prevalent in the black population, due to miscegenation, it can occur in other groups. The date mobilizes society and health professionals to ensure public health policies that offer dignified and efficient care, with a focus on early diagnosis and continuous treatment.
