October 23rd is Snow Leopard
October 23rd is Snow Leopard Day. The date was created to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this endangered species and to promote conservation efforts for the snow leopard (Panthera uncia), one of the most iconic but vulnerable big cats on the planet. It lives in the mountainous regions of Central Asia, in countries such as Mongolia, China, Nepal, India and Bhutan. The creation of International Snow Leopard Day was driven by the Global Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP), an international conservation program established in 2013. This effort brought together governments and organizations to protect the habitat of the snow leopard, which is also known as the "ghost of the mountains" due to its rarity and ability to camouflage itself in the snowy landscapes.
