October 23
October 23 is the feast day of Saint John of Capistrano (or Giovanni di Capestrano in Italian) . He was a Franciscan friar born in 1386 in the Abruzzo region of Italy, who distinguished himself as a missionary, theologian and military leader. He is known for his tireless dedication to preaching the Gospel, reforming the Church and fighting against the heresies of his time. He played an important role in defending Europe against the advance of the Ottoman Empire, especially in the Battle of Belgrade in 1456, where, despite his advanced age, he helped lead the Christian troops in defense of the city. Because of his courage, he is often seen as a symbol of faith and perseverance. Canonized in 1690, Saint John of Capistrano is the patron saint of military chaplains and is also venerated for his devotion to justice and truth.
