The Proclamation of the Republic in Portugal
The Proclamation of the Republic in Portugal is celebrated on October 5th . This historic event marks the end of the constitutional monarchy and the beginning of the First Portuguese Republic in 1910. The republican movement, which had been gaining strength throughout the 19th century, culminated in the 1910 revolution, led by military and civilians dissatisfied with the monarchy. In the early hours of October 4th to 5th, republican rebels took strategic points in Lisbon, confronting forces loyal to King Manuel II, who ended up abdicating and going into exile in England. With the republican victory, the Republic was proclaimed and a provisional government was established. October 5th is therefore a symbolic date in Portugal, celebrating the transition to the republican regime and the ideals of freedom and democracy.
