National Firefighter Dog Day, celebrated on October 1
National Firefighter Dog Day, celebrated on October 1 , honors the dogs that serve in Brazil's fire departments. The Dalmatian, known for its spotted coat, first became associated with firefighters in the 18th century, when it served as a carriage dog, running alongside horses that pulled fire engines. Although motor vehicles have replaced horse-drawn carriages, the Dalmatian remains a symbol of firefighting, educating the public about fire safety and honoring the tradition and heroism of firefighting dogs. In addition to their role in firefighting, dogs perform a variety of functions in society, including search and rescue, herding, assisting people with disabilities, therapy, and detecting substances such as drugs and explosives.
