Our Lady of Penha Day is celebrated on September 8th
Our Lady of Penha Day is celebrated on September 8th in honor of the Virgin Mary under this title. Devotion to Our Lady of Penha dates back to the 13th century, when, according to tradition, she appeared to Rodrigo de Alvarenga in Portugal, encouraging him to build a chapel on top of a cliff in Guimarães. Rodrigo would have had difficulty carrying out this task, until Maria helped him transport the stones to the desired location. After the construction of the chapel, it became a place of pilgrimage and devotion. The festival is marked by masses, processions, novenas and other religious activities, and is celebrated in many parts of the world, especially in communities where Marian devotion is strong. The faithful express their devotion through prayers and songs, seeking Our Lady's intercession in their lives.
