Palenque: Ancient Mayan City
Palenque is an ancient Mayan city located in the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico. It is recognized as one of the most important and impressive Mayan cities, known for its majestic architecture and its stunning location surrounded by dense tropical jungle. Palenque's buildings and temples were built in harmony with the surrounding natural landscape. Many of them are adorned with detailed carved stone reliefs depicting mythological scenes, royal figures and religious rituals. These sculptures are considered masterpieces of Mayan art. The Temple of Inscriptions is one of the highlights of Palenque. In it, inscriptions were found that reveal the history and genealogy of the city's rulers. The site is also known for housing the tomb of King Pakal, an important Mayan ruler, whose burial chamber was discovered in 1952.
