Our Lady of the Snows Day is celebrated on August 5th
Our Lady of the Snows Day is celebrated on August 5th . Our Lady of the Snows is one of the many ways in which the Virgin Mary is venerated in the Catholic tradition. The feast of Our Lady of the Snows dates back to an ancient tradition linked to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore) in Rome. According to tradition, in the fourth century, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius and a Roman nobleman named John. She instructed them to build a church in the place where they found snow the next morning, in the middle of summer. The next morning, August 5, a specific area of the Esquiline Hill in Rome was covered in snow. The Pope and John took this as a divine sign and built the Basilica of Saint Mary Major on the site.
