It is one of the oldest and most traditional clubs in southern Portugal. Founded on April 1, 1910 in the city of Faro, Algarve, the club has a long history and a strong connection with the region. Farense is known for its black and white badge and is the city's main representative in Portuguese football. Farense was founded by a group of friends with a great passion for football and the objective of promoting the sport in the Algarve region, which at that time did not yet have great football expression in Portugal. Over the decades, the club grew to become one of the largest sporting institutions in the region. The club is known as “Os Leões de Faro” in reference to the lion on its emblem and its connection with the city of Faro.
