In the 19th century, surfing was banned by Christians, who believed that the activity was pagan. The surfboard made of fiberglass was invented in the 1940s, during World War II. The creator of this revolutionary board was Californian Robert Simmons. From 1980, a world industry specialized in surfing emerged, including the creation of the world circuit. The first surf championships in Brazil took place in 1975, in Ubatuba (Sao Paulo) and Rio de Janeiro.
