The Chinese saw their land as the Middle Kingdom, that is, the Heavenly Middle Kingdom, where the stars never set. The Emperor, or the Son of Heaven, was regarded as a mediator between Heaven and Earth. He kept in touch with his imperial astrologer, who informed him of the changing days of the seasons and could predict and interpret all celestial signs. There was a belief that if the emperor did not correctly interpret the heavenly signs, he would lose all his powers. Therefore, it was very important that his advisors accurately observe all movements in the sky. Any mistake was punished with beheading.
