Santos Futebol Clube was founded on April 14, 1912. A curious coincidence: Santos was founded on the exact same day as the sinking of the Titanic. Santos was not born alvinegro Praiano. In the first year of existence, the colors of the São Paulo coast team were white, blue and gold. Only in March of the year following its foundation, the players began to wear white shorts and a shirt with black and white stripes as their uniform.

The shield with black and white stripes had a circle in the middle with the letters SFBC (acronym for the spelling then: Santos Foot-Ball Club) and was superimposed on a colored terrestrial globe. In the 1920s, Santos' mascot was a fish, inspired by the nickname the team had already earned after being teased by opponents. Because it was very fragile, in the 1950s, the animal was replaced by the whale by the cartoonist Messias de Melo, from the newspaper Gazeta Esportiva. The representation of the team as an orca pleased the fans. In 2006, the team launched the two mascots used until today: Baleião and Baleinha.

Santos' first coach was an Irishman named Harold Cross. Santos scored 100 goals in 16 games in the 1927 Campeonato Paulista. The most impressive thing: the team was not champion. The cup went to Palestra Italia. One of the greatest players in the history of Santos, Coutinho debuted in professional football at just 14 years old in the 7-1 defeat by Peixe over the extinct Sírio Libanês, from Goiás. In 1961 Santos de Pelé lost a friendly against Olympiacos, from Greece. The feat was so extraordinary for the Greeks that it was included in the club's official anthem.

Pele was once a goalkeeper! In 1963, Santos was beating Grêmio by 4 x 3 for the Taça Brasil when goalkeeper Gilmar was expelled. Unable to make any changes, Peixe had to improvise Pelé in goal. And the King did the trick: the game ended 4 x 3. Santos was twice world champion in 1962 and 1963, playing against Benfica and Milan at Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro. The match against Milan, by the way, marks the biggest audience in the history of Santos: there were more than 120,000 people present at the stadium.

Santos was the first Brazilian team to win the Libertadores and the World Cup, in 1962. Brazilian football would only win the World Cup again in 1981, with Flamengo. Santos was also the first Brazilian team to beat Boca Juniors in La Bombonera in an official game: it was in the 1963 Libertadores final. In 1964 Santos beat Botafogo de Ribeirão Preto by 11 x 0. Only King Pelé scored eight goals.

In 1969, Pelé's Santos stopped a two-year war in Biafra, Nigeria. The truce came about so that Nigerians could enjoy the great football of the King in peace. Santos was the first Brazilian team to reach the milestone of 10,000 goals scored. Of the so-called “Big 12” of Brazilian football, Santos is the only one not based in a capital. In 2002, Peixe was the last team to be Brazilian champion in a final. From 2003, the Brasileirão started to be disputed in consecutive points.
