The history of Goiás Esporte Clube is not different from the history of other Brazilian clubs: it also started with a group of friends who liked to play football and decided to found a club. The first founding meeting started in the Barsi brothers' house, but was moved to the sidewalk of the house by the Barsi's mother, due to the noise that accompanied the meeting. This took place on April 6, 1943, marking the founding date.

With no money to invest in its own uniform, Goiás played its first match, against Atlético Goianiense, with shirts donated by América Mineiro. There were only 9 pieces with horizontal green and white stripes and, therefore, it was necessary for 2 players to wear completely white shirts in the game, which took place at the Olympic Stadium. The team's coat of arms was embroidered by hand by the wife of one of the founders.

Today the number 33 is considered symbolic by the Emerald fan, but it wasn't always like that. At the beginning of the day, Goiás was nicknamed Clube dos 33 by opponents who wanted to belittle the small number of fans of the team. The game turned when the first scorer of the team, Sebastião “Tão” Segurado, scored 22 goals in the Campeonato Goiano, in 1956, and dedicated the feat to the 33 fans of Alviverde.

The Goiás mascot underwent a makeover in 2017 and stopped being the friendly and charismatic parakeet to become the Pistol Parakeet, with defined muscles and a mean face. The move divided fans at the time. There were those who complained that the new mascot could encourage violence and those who thought the update was a great marketing move

The year 2010 saw the green and white colors shine in the South American championship. Goiás reached the final stage of the championship, losing to Independiente (from Argentina) on penalties. However, this defeat is unimportant: what really matters is that the vice-championship of the Copa Sudamericana shows that Goiás is one of the great Brazilian teams of today.

Goiás competed in the Brazilian Championship for the first time in 1967 (during the ninth edition of the then Taça Brasil). It is the only club from Goiás to have participated in the Copa Libertadores of America and to have reached a final in both the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa do Brasil. In addition, he is the greatest champion of the Goiano Championship, with 28 titles, being a fifth championship between 1996 and 2000. Since the year 2000, there have been 11 state champions, 3 regional champions and 1 national champion.

Verdão da Serra, as it is called by its fans, also won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B in 1999 and 2012, and 3 editions of the Copa Centro-Oeste, in 2000, 2001 and 2002, having reached third place in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série That of 2005 in its most outstanding campaign, in addition to winning the international friendly tournaments Manoel dos Reis e Silva, in 1971, when it defeated Alianza Lima of Peru in the final, and in 2015 the Granada Cup, being for its performance on the pitch, the most successful association in the region.

For over 20 years, the club remained small. With no money and still shy next to the big ones in the state, during the 1950s and 1960s, Goiás was jokingly called by rivals "Clube dos 33" – a joke that this would be the number of fans the club had. In addition to the reputation of being unpopular, the team was also considered a loser: there were years, in which the only shine came from striker Tao Segurado, who wore the emerald shirt between 1954 and 1961 and was the first player on the team to be top scorer in the Goiano Championship, in 1956.

During the 1970s, the emeralds conquered 4 state titles and participated, in 1973, in their first Brazilian Championship of the modern era. The 13th place was acceptable, but the highlight was a specific match, one of the greatest in the club's history: at Pacaembu, against Santos, Santos won 4-1 and victory already seemed assured, so much so that Pelé was substituted. In the last 15 minutes, Lucinho, Matinha and especially Paghetti – who scored three goals – shone and managed a glorious 4-4 tie. joke.

During the 1980s, Goiás already owned the state. With the conquest of 5 state titles in the decade and a conquest of the Centro-Oeste Cup, its fans became massive and was already one of the biggest in the region. The "Verdão da Serra", as the club was affectionately called, also constantly rose to greater heights in the Brazilian Championship – often having a prominent role, as in 1983. at the front and was led by Luvanor.
