April 24 is Meningitis Awareness Day
April 24 is Meningitis Awareness Day, a date dedicated to raising awareness among the population about the risks of this serious disease and the importance of prevention. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, and can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi.
The disease can progress quickly and cause permanent consequences, such as hearing loss, learning difficulties and, in severe cases, death. It is estimated that more than 5 million people are affected annually worldwide, with a significant mortality rate and cases of serious consequences.
Vaccination is the most effective form of prevention. In Brazil, the Unified Health System (SUS) offers free vaccines that protect against the main types of meningitis, such as meningococcal C, pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae type B. In addition, it is essential to be aware of the symptoms, which include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, nausea and sensitivity to light.
