Metalworker's Day
April 21st Metalworker's Day in Brazil. This date is a tribute to workers in the metalworking industry — professionals who deal with the production, transformation and maintenance of metals and machines, and are fundamental to the development of the national industry.
The date coincides with the day of the death of Tiradentes (Joaquim José da Silva Xavier), in 1792. Although he is best known as a martyr of the Inconfidência Mineira, Tiradentes also worked as an ensign (a type of military officer), but at the same time, he worked as a blacksmith, which symbolically links him to metalworkers.
Metalworkers are present in several sectors, such as:
Automotive industry
Civil and naval construction
Manufacture of machines and tools
Steel and metalworking companies
They are known for their strong union organization and their historical fight for better working conditions, fair wages and labor rights.
