Mine Awareness
April 4th is Mine Awareness and Mine Action Assistance Day, created by the UN to raise awareness of the dangers of explosive devices left over from war. Millions of landmines still threaten civilians in countries such as Afghanistan, Syria and Ukraine, causing death and injury every day.
Humanitarian organizations promote demining campaigns and support for victims, while the UN reinforces the importance of funding to eliminate these dangers. According to the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), more than 5,000 people are affected by mines each year.
The event highlights the need for international cooperation to eradicate these explosive devices and ensure the safety of affected communities. Experts warn that the destruction of mines is not only a humanitarian act, but also essential for sustainable development.
