March 24 is Tuberculosis Day
March 24 is Tuberculosis Day, with the aim of raising global awareness about tuberculosis (TB), one of the oldest and most deadly infectious diseases that still affects millions of people around the world. The date was chosen to mark the day in 1882 when German physician Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes the disease.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs, but can also affect other organs. Despite being a treatable and curable disease, TB continues to be a major public health challenge, especially in developing countries, where living conditions and lack of access to medical care contribute to the spread of the disease.
World Tuberculosis Day aims to educate the population about the signs and symptoms of the disease, the importance of early diagnosis, and the need for appropriate treatment. In addition, the day highlights global efforts to eradicate tuberculosis and reduce inequalities in access to treatment. Health organizations and governments promote educational activities, awareness campaigns and events to remind everyone of the importance of continuing the fight against TB.
