Preservation of Our Water Resources
March 14 is the day of Ação pelos Rios. This data was established with the objective of raising awareness about the importance of rivers and waters for the environment and communities around the world, as well as promoting actions for the preservation and protection of vital resources.
It was created in 1997, due to a movement initiated in Latin America, with the purpose of calling attention to the increasing health of two rivers due to pollution, uncontrolled exploration and the construction of large dams. The day also seeks to highlight the fundamental role of rivers in human survival, as a source of drinking water, transportation, food and sustainable ecosystems.
In various parts of the world, local organizations and groups promote clean-up activities, awareness campaigns, lectures and events to engage the population in defending rivers and other bodies of water. The International River Water Day serves as a sign that, without the preservation of rivers and water, many communities can face serious challenges in the future.
