February 23 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day
February 23 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Brazil. The date was established with the aim of promoting awareness about human trafficking, a crime that affects millions of individuals around the world and is one of the cruelest forms of exploitation and violation of human rights.
Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation and exploitation of individuals through coercion, fraud or deception, for the purposes of forced labor, sexual exploitation or even organ trafficking. This crime not only violates human dignity, but also destroys families and communities. Brazil, due to its geographic location and social conditions, is both a country of origin, destination and transit for victims of trafficking.
On this day, several government entities, NGOs and social movements promote awareness-raising actions, discussions, lectures and campaigns to alert the population about the signs of human trafficking, how to identify potential victims and how to report it. The objective is to mobilize society and authorities to combat this crime, in addition to providing support to victims and strengthening public prevention policies.
