February 27 is the feast day of Saint Gabriel of Sorrows, also known as Saint Gabriel Possenti, was a young Italian saint born in Assisi on March 1, 1838. Famous for his deep religious devotion and courage, he entered the seminary after promising to become a religious if he overcame serious illnesses. He lost his mother at a young age and grew up with his father, becoming a skilled marksman. Gabriel entered religious life after the death of his sister and a spiritual experience during a procession.
In addition to his religious dedication, Gabriel became known for an act of bravery, when he disarmed mercenaries who invaded the town of Isola del Gran Sasso, saving a young girl and being hailed as "the savior of the town". Although skilled with weapons, he chose religious life and was known for his strong devotion to the Virgin Mary.
Saint Gabriel died at the age of 23, a victim of tuberculosis. He is remembered as the patron saint of youth and shooters. His feast day is celebrated on February 27, the date of his death, in honor of his courage, faith and devotion.
