February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord day for the Catholic Church and some Eastern Christian traditions. The date marks the moment when, according to the Gospel of Luke, Mary and Joseph presented the baby Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem, in compliance with Jewish law.
Religious significance
The celebration is considered one of the oldest in the Christian tradition, dating back to the 4th century. Also known as the Feast of the Purification of Mary or the Feast of Candlemas, the date symbolizes the presentation of Jesus as the light that illuminates the world. In the temple, the boy was welcomed by the elder Simeon, who proclaimed the famous prayer “Nunc Dimittis” (Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace), recognizing Jesus as the Messiah.
Traditions and rituals
The feast is marked by the blessing of candles, in reference to the light of Christ, and by luminous processions in many Christian communities around the world. In churches, candles are blessed and distributed to the faithful, symbolizing faith and the mission to bring the light of Christ to the world.
In some cultures, the date is also associated with rituals of purification and spiritual renewal. In Mexico, for example, the Candlemas Festival is celebrated with traditional meals, such as tamales, and family gatherings.
