December 6th is St. Nicholas
December 6th is St. Nicholas Day and has its roots in the life of St. Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century bishop known for his generosity and acts of kindness, especially towards children and those in need. He was born in Patara, Lycia (present-day Turkey), and throughout his life he became famous for performing miracles and helping the poor. One of the best-known legends tells of how he helped three girls who were about to be sold into slavery by providing dowries so that they could marry. Another story tells of him resurrecting three boys who had been murdered and were hidden in barrels. Over time, the cult of St. Nicholas spread throughout Europe, especially in the Netherlands, where he became a central figure in Christmas celebrations. In many countries, children leave out shoes or stockings in the hope that he will fill them with gifts and sweets.
