December 5th is the feast day of Saint Martin of Dume . He was born in Pannonia (present-day Hungary) in 518 and distinguished himself as a bishop and missionary in the 6th century. After studying in the East, Rome and France, he was sent to Gallaecia (northwest of the Iberian Peninsula) to convert the Suebi, who followed Arianism. He founded a monastery in Dume, near Braga, becoming bishop of the region and later archbishop of Braga. Saint Martin played a crucial role in the Christianization of the Suebi and in the strengthening of the Catholic faith, and was also an influential writer and translator. He died on March 20th, 579 and his relics are in the Cathedral of Braga.
