Lei Day
Lei Day , an annual event celebrating Hawaiian culture, takes place on May 1 . Highlighted by flower leis known as "leis," each island in Hawaii has its own version, made from local flora, symbolizing the aloha spirit of love and friendship. The festivities include parades, lei competitions, hula dances and the Lei Day Queen contest. Schools play a key role by offering workshops and performances that celebrate Hawaiian culture. Don Blanding, a Hawaiian writer and poet, was the proponent of the holiday in 1928, with its officialization occurring the following year. The choice of date coincides with the arrival of spring, when the flowers are in their splendor.
