World Mosquito Day, celebrated on August 20
World Mosquito Day, celebrated on August 20 , honors Nobel Prize-winning British doctor Ronald Ross, who in 1897 discovered that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans. Their discovery shed light on the role of these insects in spreading diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika, which cause more than 700,000 deaths annually. On this day, we seek to raise awareness about measures to prevent these diseases, such as closing doors and windows at dusk and eliminating mosquito breeding sites. Furthermore, the importance of understanding the causes of the proliferation of these insects, such as deforestation and accelerated urbanization, is highlighted. It also serves to recognize the relevance of mosquitoes in biodiversity, as they play important roles in pollination and the food chain.
