In the Second Age of Middle-earth
In the Second Age of Middle-earth, 19 rings were created by the Elves for healing, building, and understanding, and distributed among the races: three for the Elf-kings, seven for the Dwarf-lords, and nine for Men. Sauron, who had a hand in their creation, secretly forged the One Ring to control them. In the Third Age, most of the rings were destroyed, leaving only three, which lost their power when the One Ring was destroyed. The three rings of the Elves are: Narya (Ring of Fire) with a ruby; Nenya (Ring of Water) of mithril with a diamond; and Vilya (Ring of Air) of gold with a sapphire.
