Este and Esse

Este and Esse are demonstrative pronouns that serve to position the speech in space and time. Este (indicates proximity to the person speaking) and Esse (indicates proximity to the person being spoken to). When it comes to the 1st person of the speech (eu and nos), the use of this, these, this and this indicates a close or present position. For example: "Este lugar é lindo! Temos de voltar novamente." When it comes to the 2nd person of the speech (tu and vós, or você(s)), the use of this, these, this and this indicates a position that is a little distant, past and near future. For example: "De quem é essa caneca que você está segurando?"
