A byte is one of the integral data types in computing. It is often used to specify the size or amount of memory or storage capacity of a certain device, regardless of the type of data. The common byte encoding is 8 bits, although it can have other quantities such as 7. The 8-bit byte is more correctly called an octet in the context of computer networking and telecommunications. One half of a byte (4 bits) is called a nibble or semioctecto.
